Workplace Wellbeing: Managing Stress and Avoiding Burnout

April marks National Stress Awareness Month in the UK, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of stress on our wellbeing. With many of us spending a large portion of our lives at work, it’s imperative to acknowledge the role workplace stress plays in our overall health and find ways to manage it.

What is Work-Related Stress?

Work-related stress happens when the demands of a job exceed a person’s ability to cope and manage. It can come from tight deadlines, high workloads, lack of control, or even workplace relationships. If left unchecked, stress can lead to burnout, affecting both physical and mental health, as well as overall job performance.

Signs of Stress at Work

Stress affects everyone differently, but some common signs to look out for:
  • Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope
  • Feeling distracted/unable to focus
  • Increased irritability or mood swings
  • Fatigue and trouble sleeping
  • Frequent headaches or muscle tension

Steps to Manage Stress in the Workplace

Here are some practical steps to help manage stress in the workplace:
  1. Prioritise Tasks – Break your workload into easy to follow steps and work out what needs prioritising, make a list.
  2. Take Breaks – Short breaks throughout the day can help reset your mind and improve productivity.
  3. Communicate – Speak openly with colleagues or managers about workload concerns.
  4. Set Boundaries – Establish clear boundaries between work and personal time to maintain a healthy balance.
  5. Practice Mindfulness – Techniques such as deep breathing or meditation can help reduce stress levels.
  6. Getting Outside On Your Break – Getting some fresh air and taking a walk can work wonders.
  7. Providing Wellbeing Initiatives for Employees – Providing services such as mindfulness workshops to provide teams with the tools to manage stress. Offering treatments such a office massage to help encourage tension release and aid in relaxation, creating a calmer and more productive workforce. Reducing Workplace Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. To prevent burnout, organisations should promote a culture that values the wellbeing of their team. Encouraging flexible working, creating a supportive work environment, offering workplace wellbeing services, and recognising people’s efforts can go a long way in creating a healthier workplace.
